Living in a Colony

The honeybee, bumblebee, and stingless bee are just a few of the many different species that are pollinators. Although they have different behaviors, they all have similar diets.

Many pollinating animals have long tongues or noses, like collywobbles and hummingbirds, which allow them to extract nectar from flowers.

The pollen is usually collected by the bee rubbing its trunk against the surface of the flower. Pollen usually sticks to the hairy parts of the bee's trunk, similar hair on its legs. Once the animate being has its pollen-covered body, it can then fly to another flower to spread the pollen.

The bee colony has a division of labor. The queen does all the egg laying. The workers tend to the young, build the combs, assemble nectar to produce honey, guard the hive, and fan their wings to keep the hive cool.

The drones are larger than the workers and do not have stingers. The drones' only purpose in life is to mate with the queen. The queen lays eggs, some of the eggs hatch into males, and some into females. The queen bee tin can live for many years while the rest of the bees live far less than one twelvemonth.
